Types of Safaris

Game-Viewing Safaris

The following is a list of the best Game-Viewing countries throughout Africa;

Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia, South Africa, Uganda, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.

NOTE:The international news has many negative reports about Zimbabwe. As Zimbabwe continues to go through many changes and challenges, we at Safari Guides want you to know that all of the National Parks are open, the Game-Viewing is excellent, and the rates are very affordable.

Cultural Safaris

Our Cultural Safaris take place in all of the Game-Viewing countries listed above. They do incorporate Game-Viewing, but the focus of these Safaris is meeting and getting to know the local people. Along with a Safari Guides, guide, the local people will be your escorts so you can experience and be a part of their fascinating cultures. In addition, we offer trips to West African Countries such as, Senegal, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon.

Exploration Safaris

Some of our Exploration Safaris also incorporate Game-Viewing, however this depends on your geographic location. These Safaris include other amazing destinations in Africa, such as, Egypt, featuring its ancient history. We also offer Sahara Desert Expeditions. These take place in the countries of Libya, Niger, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Mali featuring the famous city of Timbuktu!

Walking Safari/Game Tracking on foot

Walking affords the chance to become a part of nature, a participant rather than a spectator. The experience is qualitative not quantitative and will become a part of you forever. Introducing you to this unique experience is your Professional Guide. He/she will carefully and comprehensively brief you before the commencement of each Walk. Walking is quite safe, and adventurous.

The experience is a rare privilege, as you will leave Africa with a greater love and understanding of nature and of yourself. Walks are usually conducted in early morning or in the afternoon. The duration is dictated by the conditions of the terrain and by the wants, fitness levels and comfort of the participants. The Walking areas are generally close to National Parks, Game Reserves or REMOTE unspoiled areas. The best way to feel, touch, hear and smell the real Africa is on foot.

Walking in the bush is the ultimate African experience. To follow a Professional Tracker on the spoor of a Lion or a Rhino is to be transported back into the timeless tradition that is almost lost to the modern world. When you're on foot everything is of significance - wind direction, terrain, and vegetation contribute to how animals behave.

During afternoon breaks and in the evening talks are given on animal behavior, bird life, plant ecology, medicinal uses, geology, astronomy and history. These talks are not given to supplement your daily Safari experience but to enable you to understand what you have been experiencing.

We offer three different types of Walking/Foot Safaris,

*Easy to Moderate: This type of walk is most often nearby your Tented Camp or a Bush Lodge. The pace is leisurely and the distance usually does not exceed five kilometers.

*Moderate to Rugged: These walks take place in more remote areas. Often these locations are outside of National Parks. We will cover longer distances and the terrain can often be more challenging. We move at a more rapid pace as well. Generally on this type of a Safari we will not encounter other tourists or travelers.

*Rough to Tough: This is a full on Game Tracking Safari. The purpose of this Safari is to track the big game on foot. We will get as close as we possibly can. To participate on this Safari you must be fit and have a great sense of adventure! Within this category we also offer multi-day backpacking Safaris as well.

As with all of our Walking/Foot Safaris, they are led by a local professional guide whom is armed for your safety.
Your location will dictate the type of accommodation while on your Walking Safari. Some Lodges allow walking from their property.

Tents are custom made and incorporate the unique experience of sleeping in the open with the safety of being in a tent. Curtains are installed for privacy and fly sheets and side flaps for inclement weather. Beds or camp mattresses are comfortable. A shower and toilet tent are set up at each camp.

Food is filling, tasty and varied, vegetarian dishes are available! Cold drinks, wine, beer, spirits, and bottled water are available.

Types of Accommodation

In this portfolio of accommodations, we will show you some of the types of properties that we use on our trips. Properties are always changing, as new and exciting accommodations become available. We are free to select the newest and finest lodges without feeling the need to promote our own properties. Room choice and favored status is never a problem. Over the years, we have developed an excellent reputation with the hoteliers of Africa . Our requests for rooms are always regarded as a priority, and a APGS traveler can be assured of preferential treatment.

Hotels and Game Lodges

Safari Guides selects hotels and lodges based on their location to the best wildlife viewing sites, friendliness of the staff, traveler's needs, food quality and cleanliness. The aesthetics, or the feeling that each accommodation captures are of the utmost importance. Views and compatibility with the natural surroundings are also considered when recommending a property. A game lodge would be a property that is located in a game viewing area. Hotels are located in cities or towns.

Bush Estates, Private Ranches, Country Inns

One of the great charms of Africa is staying in privately owned hideaways. In East Africa , many of these properties allow guests to take bush walks, night drives, horseback rides or camel treks. In Southern Africa , elegant estates and inns offer a wonderful way to meet people, taste local gourmet cuisine and enjoy warm, friendly hospitality. If you are interested in more information please call our offices for comprehensive information about these amazing properties.

Mobile Tented Camps

Mobile Safaris are truly the African Safari of yesteryear. Camps are setup in remote areas, away from the tour circuit, where you are catered to by a personal camp staff. This is the exhilarating experience that enraptured Hemingway, Finch-Hatton and Roosevelt . Mobile camps are set on private sites in top game areas. As your mobile camp moves from one area to another, you will stay in your choice of bush estates or lodges.

Safari Guides Safaris provides the widest range of mobile camping standards available in Africa . Choose from the elegant 1920's luxury mobile style, with all the comforts of a 5-star hotel or a modest participation camp. With the assistance of a Safari Guides Safari Specialist, you set your itinerary and the camp standards including the size of the tent, menu, camp staff, toilet and shower facilities. Safari Guides mobile tented camps are a once in a lifetime experience.

Semi-Mobile Tented Camps

The semi-mobile camp is an excellent value, and is designed to offer the experience of the mobile camp to the traveler who may only want to stay a few nights in a camp. Campsites are small, generally providing five to nine tents setup for a season in a select area. Sleeping tents are large, with very comfortable furnishings and proper camp toilet facilities, including hot and cold water. A dining tent and often a lounge or library tent is also provided.
